Night School Studio, the developer of 2016’s brilliant narrative adventure Oxenfree, has revealed its next game, Afterparty.
“In Afterparty, you are Milo and Lola,” says Night School, “recently deceased best buds who suddenly find themselves staring down an eternity in Hell.
“But there’s a loophole: outdrink Satan and he’ll grant you re-entry to Earth […] Time to go on the best bender ever, uncover the mystery of why you’ve been damned, and drink the big guy under the table”.
That’s all Night School has to say about Afterparty currently, but, IGN has managed to tease out a little more. Afterparty, it seems, is another narrative-focussed adventure in the same vein as Oxenfree, this time built around a night of debauched pub crawling along the River Styx. Your ultimate goal is to sneak into Satan’s afterparty and drink your way out of Hell.
Afterparty’s underworld is inspired by those of numerous religions and denominations, and each neighbourhood you encounter on your travels sports its own distinctive drinking hole.
It sounds like things take on a slightly more traditional adventure game turn once you’re inside a bar. Here, you’re able to switch freely between Lola and Milo, drinking and mingling at your leisure in order to progress the story, which will adapt to reflect your choices.
As an example of Afterparty’s puzzle side, there’s talk of different drinks imbuing your crew with different abilities to help on the journey toward salvation, some drinks lowering their inhibitions and others bolstering their confidence to tackle the job at hand.
Afterparty sounds utterly chaotic, but if it can tackle post-college disaffection as well as Oxenfree did spirited teen angst, it could be something very special indeed.
It’s currently pencilled in for a 2019 release, and there’s a load of gorgeous concept art on Night School Studio’s website to tickle your curiosity until proper footage is revealed.
